It’s common to use a dropdown list to select a value from an enumeration. In ASP.NET Core MVC you can use Html.GetEnumSelectList to create the items for an enumeration. This is very convenient and very productive. However, this helper doesn’t exist in Blazor. In this post, we’ll create something even easier to use.

The component InputSelect allows binding a property of type Enum. However, you need to provide all options manually which is error-prone and not very productive:

You can make this code more generic by iterating on Enum.GetValues:

This way you can copy/paste the code for any enumeration you want to bind to a select. However, the display text is not customizable, so not very use friendly. It is also not localized. As always in Blazor, the solution is to create a component! Components allow encapsulating reusable behaviors. Then, you can use them in your other components and avoid duplicating code.

InputSelectEnum Blazor component

To create this component, I checked how the InputSelect component is made on GitHub. The code is very simple. It contains 2 methods: BuildRenderTree and TryParseValueFromString. We’ll change the first one to populate the option elements when creating the tree instead of using the template ChildContent. The TryParseValueFromString method converts the string value from the select element to a valid enumeration value. We’ll adapt this method to support nullable types.

A few points to note in the implementation:

This component supports nullable types which is not the case of the InputSelect component.

This component read the [Display] attribute to create the option display names. If no attribute is defined, it decamelizes the enumeration member name. This attribute allows localizing the application.

In previous posts, we have created components using the razor syntax. In this case, it is easier to create the component in C# code only. You can add the code in the “Shared” folder, so the component is accessible in all the views. I’ve added a few comments to explain the code. But don’t worry, there’s nothing complicated in this component.

Converting Azure Pipeline with Task Groups to Yaml

We have a fairly complex pipeline which builds, tests and deploys our ASP.net MVC app to an Azure WebApp in an App Service Environment. Because we have several high profile customers we actually deploy the app to separate web apps for each customer 'instance' so they have database and application isolation.

Because each customer instance is identical except for some App Settings to point to a separate database; deployment is the same except the web app location. Currently we have a Task Group with parameters setting the name of the instance (for the Task Display Name), the app location and the staging url so we can run tests.

I would prefer to use the new YAML pipeline for this app so its easier to add new customer 'instances' in the future and we can source control the pipeline.

After some investigation, I discovered I can pass parameter 'objects' into a template YAML file to pretty much do what I want; the only tricky bit was to have multiple properties per instance parameter 'object' and using the new template {{ each }} expression.

Below is how I constructed my yaml files for this solution.

All about Tag helpers in asp.net core MVC explained by sagar jaybhay

Asp page tag helper / Tag helpers in Asp.net Core MVC

This is new in Asp.net core.

These are a server-side component.

It is processed on the server and renders an HTML element in razor files.

It is similar to Html helpers

There are so many tag helpers like generating the link, creating forms, etc,

To use tag helper we need to import these tag helper first.

For example, we need to create anchor a tag with the help of tag helper

<a asp-controller="home" asp-action="Details" asp-route-id="@stud.StudentId">Details</a>

In this

asp-controller= is took controller name

asp-action= is the action or method name present in that controller

asp-route-id= is the parameter we pass to that method.

You can see if we use Tag-Helper the color is changed syntax is good and clean. Now we can see the same example, by HTML helper.

Also, another way is to create an anchor element.

@Url.Action("details", "home", new id = stud.StudentId );

The use of above method is that it returns string element.

Advantages of Tag Helper? / Why use Tag Helper?

Tag helper generates the link as per the route template. If in future you route template change these changes are present on startup.cs file and if you use regular Html static code or Html helper then newly generated URL is not present in that HTML file.

Image Tag Helper:

Use general img tag but only in that add one asp-append-version=”true” property add so that it converts to image tag helper and it is very useful.

First, it enhances the <img> tag which provides cache-busting behavior for a static image file. First, understand what it means browser have cache functionality if we use image one and after the certain period we use image 2 but the name is same so the browser will show old file because when we use several times it saves in cache memory. To avoid this asp-append-version which enables us to append a unique hash value to the name of the image and it is calculated based on an image if our image change in future value will change. So it means when our image on server change the new hash will be generated and it is appended to image.

Environment Tag Helper:

It used for conditionally loading or rendering the elements which are present inside the tag and it is based on hosting setting. Environment variables have a name attribute which we pass the comma-separated value which matches with hosting environment and result will produce.

It is used to cache the content and improve the performance of asp.net application.

<cache>@DateTime.Now</cache> The cache expiration time is 20 by default. expires-on:- This attribute is used to set expiration date. <cache expires-on="@new DateTime(2025,1,29,17,02,0)"> Current Time Inside Cache Tag Helper: @DateTime.Now </cache>

expires-after:is used to set expires after the first request

Form Tag Helpers in Asp.Net Core:

To create strongly typed form in asp.net core we use form tag with adding asp-action,asp-controller like attribute so it becomes form tag helper.

To create strongly typed form use an asp-for attribute in your Html tag element like input, select, radio buttons. I am showing the example below in which Student is our model and it is strongly bound to our create form tag.

In the above example, we also use a select tag. we have 3 ways to add data in a select tag but I am using only one way in which we take enum which declared enum in model.

ASP.NET - Generate Excel files programmatically with EPPlus

If you've stumbled upon this post it most likely means that you're looking for a way to generate MS Excel XLS / XLSX files within your ASP.NET web application. The typical scenario for such needis the following one: you have a DBMS from where you pull off some data - using a OleDBConnection, a SqlConnection, an EntityFramework model or anything database-fetching technique - which you want to send to your users through a downloadable MS Excel file. In purely theoretical terms, you might think about doing this using the MS Office Interop libraries, using a technique similar to what we explained in a couple other articles: Programmatically convert MS Word DOC and DOCX files to PDF using Office Interop Programmatically Access, Read and Edit MS Word DOC and DOCX files using Office Interop However, if you are here (or if you already read those posts) you most likely already know that the Microsoft Office primary interop assemblies (PIAs), better known as Office Interop, are not something you should rely upon: although there is an ASP.NET library package specifically designed to handle MS Excel files, the whole Office.Interop set of libraries is not meant to be used in web applications and will definitely cause you some nasty setup and configuration issues, such as those we enumerated (and tried to deal with) there. Luckily enough, there's a good news for you: a NuGet library package that does basically the same tasks you might want to use the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel namespace for, while working way better than that in a typical web application scenario: and it's also completely free to use! We're talking of EPPlus, a great library developed by Jan Kallman and available either on GitHub and as a compiled, full-flegded NuGet package. The project is licensed under the GNU Library General Public License (LGPL), meaning that it can be used everywhere. In this post we'll briefly show how we can install this great tool on a typical Visual Studio environment and then use it to generate a MS Excel file from a standard ASP.NET DataTable which we (ideally) pulled off by a DBMS of some sort.

Installing EPPlus

The most practical way to install EPPlus from Visual Studio is to open the NuGet Package Manager Console (View > Other Windows > Package Manager Console) and type the following command: If you prefer to install it through the .NET CLI, you can use this command from an elevated command prompt or powershell prompt: Version notes It's worth noting that this test-drive was performed using EPPlus version 4.5.3.1, which was the latest available version at the time of writing: such version is fully compatible with all the most recent versionf of the .NET Framework, from 3.5 to 4.7.x (we tested it with 4.7.2).

EPPlus usage example

Without further ado, here's a full source code sample that will convert a standard DataTable to a XLSX Excel file and then send it to the user for the download: As we can see, this is an ActionResult method that could fit on any ASP.NET MVC Controller: if you're not using ASP.NET MVC you can still use it, just copy the method content wherever you need to (classic ASP.NET, Console Application, Windows Forms, and so on). The code is quite self-explanatory and full of comments that should hopefully explain the various processing steps. However, let's briefly summarize what are we doing here: We fetch a DataTable object using a custom Data Provider method. We create a ExcelPackage object, which is the main container used by EPPlus for the XLSX file. We add a ExcelWorksheet inside the ExcelPackage, which is the worksheet we'll put the data in. We iterate the DataTable columns, adding them to the first row of our worksheet to build our header row. We iterate the DataTable rows, adding each one of them to our worksheet (starting from row 2), so that each DataTable row will result in a corresponding worksheet row. Once the conversion between the DataTable and the ExcelPackage is done, we create a MemoryStream to store the ExcelPackage binary data, then convert it to a byte array. We prepare the HTML response and send the XLSX file to the user with Content-Disposition attachment, so that the browser will force the download of the file. It's worth noting that we used a one-liner function to retrieve the proper mime-type for XLSX files (which is "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet"): such function is available only since .NET Framework 4.5 and it's the preferred method to retrieve mime-types since then. If you need to retrieve the mime-type with older .NET Frameworks, you can use one of the various workaround described in this other post.
